Dude, Andy -- The HM-1s are overhead mics as far as I'm concerned. When I buy gear I always try to justify the price with a sole purpose in mind, and in the case of my HM-1s is was that they were way better overhead mics than anything I had. If I get the occasional use out of them for guitar amps, etc., it's only an added bonus.

Here's a short clip of some drums I did about a month ago. I should warn you the drum sounds aren't great: this was a metal tune and I planned to drum-replace all the drum tracks with samples from the beginning (you'll be hearing the actual drum sounds in this clip), so the overheads' sound was my main focus. Please ALSO know that I was playing a particle board Export from the early '90s, so any lack of overtone or definition is intrinsic to the sounds themselves.

;)

Edit: I forgot technical stuff -- The overheads are just Kel HM-1s to the left and right of me at around cymbal height. In the solo overheads track there's only slight subtractive eq and no compression.
