I'm looking for a 8 (or more) channel ADAT converter to link to a MOTU 828mk3. Budget is about 600 dollar/euro. Fact is that it has to have a DA converter as well, which is not common anymore.
It's not a state-of-the-art solution, but I use an old Panasonic ADAT machine to provide 8 AD & DA XLR to lightpipe. The Panasonic MDA-1 was manufactured for Panasonic by Alesis and was better for this job than the Alesis due to Panasonic's choice to go with XLR input and outputs. The Alesis relied on Elco multipins for it's balanced inputs and outputs, which leads to expensive snakes. You wouldn't even need the tape transport to be functional to use the lightpipe conversion. I have several, and the last one I bought had a non-functional tape mechanism, but the rest of it works beautifully - I got it for something like $50US from eBay. If you can find one, it should be dirt-cheap these days.
