I have a fostex vf-160 stand-alone DAW, and I just bought a full duplex sound card for my computer ($100). I am afraid I wasted my money because the DAW has ADAT optical I/O, SCSI 50 pin output, and MIDI I/O, but my sound card has only 3.5mm I/O and firewire (soundblaster audigy). I have been able to transfer audio through an rca out of the DAW, but I can't transfer digital. Am I going to have to buy another soundcard that has ADAT for $400 or what?

I don't have a Live Drive, but in searching the web, I noticed that it has Toslink optical I/O, which may or may not work with my ADAT optical. All optical may be the same, if so I would be very interested in getting a Live Drive! I couldn't find a picture of the back of one anywhere, though.
Whoa....wait a minute...not all optical are the same there bub!

There's two formats of optical...TOS link and ADAT...
TOS LINK is the two channel format and ADAT is the eight channel format.
A TOS LINK device will not read an ADAT device! And vice versa...some may have both and you have to change the mode of operation for it.
Just to let you know

Thanks Gary. I didn't know the difference between TOS LINK and ADAT. Hmph, learn sump'n new everyday. :)
Downflow, where did you get your Audigy? It should have come with a live drive. If you purchased it from a retailer, you might wanna check with them about it.
Oh wait, is it just an Audigy? The live drive will only come with the Audigy Platinum. I'm not sure if you can get one seperate. If this is the case, you might be able to exchange it for the Platinum. HTH

Yeah... Audigy != Audigy Platinum != Extigy != Audigy 2.
The first three have similiar quality specs but different I/Os (and the Extigy is USB-based). Audigy 2 is similiar to the Audigy but has higher specs. (Wouldn't really trust Creative's advertised specs though - quite a lot of it is marketing hype)

Hey Opus
When you say:
"There's two formats of optical...TOS link and ADAT..."
You problably meen: their are 2 formats that use Tos Link connectors (optical connectors, the ones with a square connector in the ends,
and they are - Adat(8 channels mono 24bit/48KHz or 4 channels 24bit/96Khz) and S-Pdif (2 channels - L R)

Do you have the live drive hooked up? I also have an Audigy and my live drive allows firewire, rca, midi, optical, s/pdif and 1/4" connections. I'm not sure about the ADAT stuff, but the Audigy(if you have the live drive) should have more than just 3.5mm and firewire ins/outs. HTH
