Hi Solomon....

Multiband is often used in radio (orban 8200) and driven hard it will work as an automatic equaliser...balancing your overall eq of your programmaterial. It can also be used for "diggin out" a vocal of your mix...if you use less compression in a few bands, you can make it to "stick out" from more compressed bass or hi-end content. So I see it more as as tool for a final mix than used for singel sources while recording.

Not really mastering related, but I use a two-band compressor often to get different sounds out of a kick drum track - being able to prolong the click and thump at different rates is pretty useful. The overlapping region that gets a little messed up (around 400-600Hzish in this case) is masked and usually cut anyway.

I think one of the most common uses in mastering would be to control sibilance in vocals, especially when it's sssssspitting in your face.
