If I may you suggest, JLM Audio kits are the best solution for the starters. You have plenty of options ... NEVEish, APIish … and those kits with its quality kick the *ss few times expensive pre's on the market.

Check the Lab forum from above for various JLM kits. Nothing but superlatives.

I've built the JLM Baby Animals, SCA N72, and the Green Pre. None of them are difficult to build if you know how to solder, and all of them have enough info/instructions that you won't be left with a product that doesn't work.

My vote is for the SCA A12 and SCA N72 for starters if you are in the US. I love the JLM stuff, but after you pay for the shipping and wait the few weeks it takes to get to the US from Australia.....you could've built a new studio.

yeah i like the jlm site. I'm thinking of either a BA2 or BA4. Probably a BA4 to get more oomph on drums

I would suggest looking at products by PAIA. They have been around for over forty years and the kits are very affordable for beginners. The tube preamp kits are not in the high-end category, but, they might suit your needs for a basic preamp.
