All the time when I am mixing I find a use for something like this, but do not own one, nor do I know if one even exists. Imagine putting a compressor plug on a single stereo track and having the comp affect the L and R channels independently of eachother. Does such a plug exist? I am sure that they make devices capable of this, but how about software?

I guess I did not read your question correctly, I thought you were looking for a compressor that worked in stereo, I got to thinking afterward that all my compressor plugs work for stereo signals however not independently on each channel. Why you would find this useful I am not sure.
The simple solution that comes to mind is to split the left and right channel into to mono sources and adjust each accordingly. In reality most stereo (possibly MS as an exception) signals are in reality two seperate sources (two mics for example) and as sauch I would think that manipulating them seperately as mono sources then panning them correctly would be the easiest solution.
Even most of the hardware stereo compressors are not really dual channel in the sense that they don't have seperate threshold, attack, etc. knobs for each channel, so in the end what you are looking to do would probably be done with two seperate single channel units anyway.

It seems to me that it was more than a few years ago, more like a decade ago. Not going to get into the pc/mac debate though, nearly any plug in you purchase will be both, but when it comes to freeware the PC architecture must be easier to encode or more accessible.
