this is my first post, but ive been watching here for a while taking a lot of great info.
okay, i want to move up to a better recording setup at my house, and i was thinking of getting an Alesis ADAT recorder, but i have a few questions that someone here could most likely answer.
1. I'm not sure which model i should get. ive seen the lx20 i think its called, and that had the price tag that i liked, but there were a few more that were more expensive, but I'm not sure what the difference was with them.
2. i have an analog mixer and i was wondering if say i mic my dumset with 5 mics, and then record onto the ADAT, after i record can i mess around and change the volume of each mic. for example maybe the snare is a little too loud but everything else is fine, so i can just change the volume of the snare?
3. and lastly how do i get the music from the vhs tape to a computer or CD?
these questions probably sound really stupid, and are worded horribly, but i am watching the sox so I'm a little distracted, and i also have no clue to when it comes to ADAT. thanks.

The ADAT has some pretty cheap converters and maxes out at 20 bits while the lowest-end Protools system is at 24 bits.
But, if you really want to go into an ADAT, this late in the game, then make sure and buy a few things to go with it.
1. Lots of tape. The supply will be going away sooner than later.
2. Extra Idler wheels. They are the first thing to go. Find out what they are and get a dozen of them.
3. A good cleaning kit. Learn exactly how to clean your Adat. If done wrong, bye bye heads.

Here's my setup that I use. I've had the Adat for a few years now and virtually have'nt used it much. It still has a little over 100 original head hours on it. I have it basically for doing Adat transfers into my DAW. I otherwords, I use my DAW 99.9 percent versus using the Adat.

save the bucks for a daw! stay away from pro-tools! why spend more... Look at something like the motu 828 mkII or the e-mu 1820m!

if you don't have much money invest on a desktop and not a laptop!
with tapes and stuff like that you'll spend more money than you think!

I would suggest that you skip the whole adat thing and go directly to a DAW (digital audio workstation) system. Check out maybe a used Digidesign 001 or similar. It will be worth your time to learn how to use a daw system and even a cheap one will sound better than an ADAT. Plus much less maintenence.
