Having tried to get my current budget mixer to record sucessfully for quite a while now with not very good results, I think another mixer may be in order. But, I'm cheap and I don't have a job right now and I probably won't start work until late August, so I need your input. I know FireWire is the best for multitrack recording, but I just don't have the money for a good FireWire mixer right now. So, I need opinions on whether USB 2.0 will work for what I'm doing: recording no more than 8 inputs at a time to Audition. I haven't dealt much with USB 2.0, so I really don't know what it's limitations are. My computer is decent: 3 GB RAM, Intel Core 2 Duo both at 2.80 GHz, and I'm using a LaCie external HD that runs at 7200. I'm using Vista Home Premium, so I guess the only requirement is that a mixer be completely compatable with Vista. So, will USB 2.0 work for my purposes or will I have to wait and save up for a capable FireWire mixer?

I am at a loss to understand why you would want to spend money on a stop gap solution. If you already have something that operates albeit poorly, why be in a rush? Even if you go to work in Aug, Oct or even Nov is only five or six months away. If the situation is that you have paid recording work then I guess you balance out income/expense. If you are just antsy to get a personal project going I suggest waiting and make a longer term purchase.
The one person I know who is using USB 2 for 8 channel is not very happy with his unit and borrows my Presonus unit more often than I am happy with.

Yeah, I figured USB 2.0 wasn't as good as FireWire, I just wanted something that would work for the time being. I'm actually going to be working out of the country for 1-2 years probably, and I don't even know if I'll ever end up shipping all or any of my instruments, amps, and everything else over. So I did want to get some recordings done before taking off, if that makes my post make a little bit more sense.

Are you doing "live" band recording? Because if not maybe you just want to pick up a traveling size 2 channel that you could hook up to a laptop. Take an inexpensive guitar and voila a band in box!
International shipping is sooo freaking expensive. I would not want to ship any of my top flight instruments anyway, too dear to my heart. I worry about flying with them carry on and haven't needed to since they changed the carry on sizes, I wonder what that is going to be like.

I already have a Tascam US-122L interface. I wanted something that I could record all my edrum outputs with so I could mix properly. All the recordings I posted on this forum were done with that dinky Tascam interface. It works, but it isn't that great mixing drums in stereo. I just want to know if USB 2.0 could handle the 8 inputs at once.

The other option I've been considering is an analog or digital multitrack recorder. I could record to the recorder without having to worry about compatability issues and what not, and then transfer the files to Audition and mix there. It sounds good in my head, anyway. Maybe I just don't like digital? What about that?

Allen Heath do some good mixers and Behringer also. I user a behringer and it's not USB. Why not get a used usb rack mounted interface... might be abetter choice if you're recording many tracks. I tend to record one or two tracks instruments and no more so tend to use many mics, DI and use a few DAW tracks,, I use Cubase 4 - get reading magazines and experiment lots. Thats the best creative advice I can help you with cos were are talking about sound engineering and not writer and playing / performing. Also if like me you want to record your own music.. Keep it simple so you can work more efficiantly and have less chance of noise issues. Also get the room you record in.. probably like me just the one, treated with dmaping/bass traps etc. Easy to make so no need to spend huige amounts of flash looking stuff.
