I just got finished with a session where I used two of these mics. They're borrowed, but I sure would like to own these! They are side-address small diaphragm condensers.
I put them in head-to-head position on my Blumlein bar, rotated them about 90 degrees from each other and recorded acoustic guitar in stereo.
These mics have the hottest output of any condenser I've ever used. And the set of features is mind-blowing: 5 switchable polar patterns; 3 level pad switch; 3 level 10k boost switch; 3 level 50 Hz rolloff switch.
The result was about as good a recording of acoustic guitar as I've ever done.
I've not been able to find any of these mics for sale on ebay. I'm not sure how long ago they were made/discontinued.
I'd like to figure out about what they're worth so I can make the owner an offer. Anybody have an idea?
Jeff

Hey Jeff, I would love to hear the recording with these. Do you happen to have an example, you could upload here?

Hi Chris! Sadly, I only got to use these on one or two sessions before returning them, and I don't recall which songs they were used on.
The owner was the widow of a guy who used them to record orchestras for film scoring. A client of mine worked with the widow and asked to borrow. She later sold them for more money than I could afford!
I now favor my matched pair of small diaphragm tube condensers, the Charter Oak M900T mics... very detailed and open. I place them in A-B with one at the 12th fret and the other about an inch below the bridge, each about 4" to 5" from the instrument. Gives a nice three-dimensional stereo image (most of the music I record has acoustic guitar as the primary instrument).

I don't use them that much and only tend to bring them out for the polar-patterns I don't have in dedicated SDCs.
But they would, most likely, be my "desert island" microphone as they will do most things very well.
The diaphragm is actually a 16mm one which would probably put them in the medium diaphragm range, rather than small.

I missed out on a pair and regret it. I went for a Neumann M149 instead (don't ask) and later sold it for a big loss because it wasn't right for my needs. I'm learning about mics (for use and just to cherish). I'm enjoying your posts, John. (y)
Well, their replacement- the MKH-800 P48 - are an astounding $51
Well, their replacement- the MKH-800 P48 - are an astounding $5100 E A C H !!! Nice mics, Dr Sennheiser sure could make some good stuff back then! If this owner has had them sitting around
in a closet collecting dust, offer them $500, but chances are they know what they've got...:)
