Hi, I'm redoing the connectors for some cables that will be used with the Shure 58A microphone. When I opened up the XLR connectors, pin 1 and pin 3 are shorted with a copper wire. Is this really needed?
I thought normally the XLR convention is:
1- ground
2- positive
3- negative

and listen for earth loop issues and the level of the noise floor

The shorting of pin 1 and pin 3 is usually done when making a balanced to unbalanced cord for example XLR to 1/4" TS, if you are making XLR to XLR balanced cables you should not jump these two pins.
