Yeah I find alot of the algorithm based reverbs to have a similar sort of sterile or kinda plain character. There's not many unique ones that come to mind. I think UVI plates and spark verb, and PSP sprinbox are a bit special for algorithmic verbs, but wouldn't describe them as super character full. I've been alot more into hybrid or just convolution type reverbs lately, as they seem to be able to capture different feels.
I recently got this plate library for nebula for around 15 bucks, haven't tried it yet. They all still sound a bit artificial to me, but seem to just be less genetic sounding to me ears then a regular algorithm reverb.
And this spring library by the same person, Tim Petherick.
If you haven't checked out liquidsonics 7th heaven or reverberate bricasti hybrid algo/convolution verbs they're too notch.
For big rooms Veinna Mir, and Inspirata by inspired Acoustics go unmatched. Just really convincing.
Does anybody do what I do…
Does anybody do what I do with a new reverb? Record a clap and add the reverb to that? So many seem to not really even behave like reverb, but are sort of creating things, with delays and panning and changes in level. Try three or four of your favourites on a single clap and you can hear and see on the screen what they’re doing. I also have a stereo field display up so you can see that centre clap filling the available full space on the ones I like. The ones I don’t like tend to be the ones where you see lots of individual little claps that sort of try to blend together. I suspect most of us just use reverb as an effect nowadays, not really even trying to be ‘real’.
Seemed nice, then I saw the price!
I watched a couple of videos, as I quite liked it ....... then I saw the price 600! Interest totally died at that point. Sure, it's clever, and I searched and searched for what I'd missed, but it's a reverb, with surround panning, for six hundred pounds/euros/dollars. Really!
Never tried the clap test…
Never tried the clap test with a verb, though usually do it when in a real room to get a sense of it's ambience.
These plugins are way less than 600€. The waves one is like 29.99 or less. They seem to me to be just a bit more rich and full than a typical algorithm reverb.
