I am new to this bulletin board and would like
any practical advice on the 'must have' items to
set up a decent recording studio from scratch.
I have been reading the excellent book 'Practical
Recording Techniques' by Bruce and Jenny Bartlett.
However the copy I have is from 1997 and with the
progress in the digital world recently I am sure
that the devotees of this board can give me some
'sound' ideas!
I would really appreciate the benefit of your
accumulated expertise to ensure I spend my money
wisely. Also I am still trying to understand if
the hardware mixing desk is obsolete now that
there are so many digital software mixing packages
around.
I am shortly moving to Thailand to assist my
wife's brother-in-law with his new Sonic Studio HD
set up where I will certainly be 'in at the deep
end'. At some point in the near future I would
like to set up my own studio, to record local
singers and groups and help develop the local
musical talent. Also my son who is becoming very
proficient on keyboards and electronic music in
general would be encouraged to participate!
I could potentially spend up to £100,000 but
realistically want to have a decent novice kit,
at a reasonable starter price, which can be
upgraded/extended as I learn. Recommendations on
mikes also required.
So let's have some input guys & gals!

Also, there is currently a similar thread going on the Daw World side of this site under Computing, titled "Sound advice needed from..." that may answer some of your questions. (That thread probably shouldn't be there either, but nothing is perfect) There is already an amazing amount of information and opinion (some based on experience) to be found by browsing back thru older threads. You could start there, then post more specific questions that don't require writing a book as an answer. That was NOT intended as a slam, it's just that there is so much to learn in order to accomplish what you want to do that no one here would have the time to start an explanation completely from scratch. That's what the threads are archived for, and books, magazines, etc.
Your question on the necessity of hardware mixing desks alone would (and has) elicited dozens of responses, and I doubt there is a concensus yet... Steve
