My Monitors (KRK V8's) are currently placed about 1.5 feet behind and 1 foot to the side of my computer monitors. They are on speaker stands and are right behind my desk right now. I was wondering if the speakers and the computer monitors should be in the same plane. I know that this will help with reflections but are there any problems with fact that the speakers may not be as well shielded from the front as they are from the side. Will my current set-up hurt my speakers?

I am also considering building a shelf that will sit on my desk and so I can bring my monitors up to the same plane as my computer screens. I am wondering if I will have any problems with sound vibrations coming from the speakers and transfering through the wood of my desk. Any thoughts?

Vibration isn't the issue but rather reflections from your desk. It is better to keep the monitors back away from tour desk / mixer. Computer monitors hurting your speakers isn't a problem but the speakers affecting the monitors is. Magnetism from the speakers can distort your CRT display. I solved this problem by purchasing a flat panel monitor for my Cubase rig. Kicks ass! Kurt
