I need to put together a drum mic set ASAP. And i am foxed by lack of availability this side of the world. Most (of the very few) distributers here do not stock.
And order on prepayment only. Which usually takes a lot longer than promised etc etc..
So for the snare I already have a SM57.
Intend on using SM58's (maybe Beta 58's if i can) on the toms.
For the kick the only thing readily available is the Sennheiser e602. I
read up and i think it's ok.
For the overheads. The only SDC available in the market off the shelf.
AKG C1000, Behringer B5, mayby the 451 (too expensive) and maybe the
Behringer ECM 8000.
I have spent the past hour and a half trying to fing something good
told about the C1000. Not happening. So that is out. I anywaz have not as of yet heard an AKG (i have not heard much either) that I really taken a liking too. The 414 i found to be a bit harsh. The 451 a bit bright (but maybe i just over EQ'd it when i worked with them a while back)
I also get to work in a studio with the Behringer B2Pro and dont like
it. so i am a bit sceptical of the B5 (it comes bundled with a omni
capsule for cheap).
Surprisingly ppl seem to mention use of the ECM8000 measurement mic (have read so before also) though since it is omni i might be a little conserned of getting more room that i like, espessially since i will not using any great rooms.
So that leaves me with nothing.
If I can, I have the option of waiting through and perhaps being able to order (while building a bank balance) a pair of sennheisers SDC's e.g. e614.
However, if push were to come to shove and i need to buy, which is the better of the bad ?
Also i have read a lotta good bout the Oktava 012. Now i was looking for the home page and am a bit confuced. I have found the following links :

While both companies seem to stock Oktavas, at oktava.net we have the model MK012 while at Oktava.com (aka sound-room.com) we have the model MC012 . The mics seem similar.

I guess I just would rather not hang my hat on something so shaky in quality.
I run a rather large commercial recording studio, so when a mic fails during a session it's a big deal.

Distortion is serious. But the ppl at http://www.oktava.com claim to be very thorugh with the mics. how does it sound ? Will ask if the 535 is available tommorow. Its 2:30 in morning here right now. :wink:

The 81's cost USD400 here. Outta my range.
I record these instruments often and would like something versatile. Flute (all kins, bamboo) Violin (Indian Carnatic mostly, a lot fatter than what western classical sounds like) Tabla, Dholak , Dholl and other indian percussions. Heavy Metal and voice. Guitars too. Though a good acoustic guitar sound has so far alluded me.
Got a mail from Soundroom. They say theey can ship to india. The oktavas seem ok. The only ther option i seem readily available is the 451 (expensve) and the 81(expensive).
Im stressed.
At the RAP SCotts been constantly suggesting the importance of dumping the 602 (not that its bad) and getting something more versatile like the 421. But the 421 will take all my budget.
In fact if i were to import a pair of 012's id probably be left with nothing for the 602. So can i resort to using the Beta 58A in the KIK ?? hoiws that sound ?

The cost of a stereo pair Oktava MC012 import from Soundroom will almost equall the purchase of two AKG451 mics (not matched) locally. And the pair of Shure SM81 (not matched) would be a tad more. What is the best choice ?
I might also get a pair of Studio projects C4's for bout the same (though i doubt it, and availability might not be there)

I personally don't like the 421 on kick ... It doesn't seem to get the low end or the "tick"that a D112 gets. The D6 and RE/PL20s both get the lows but still are hard to get "tick" out of. I am now thinking about trying the 602 due to comments made here recently.
I like 421's on guitar and bass cabs for the punch and "edge" they provide. The 421 has a big 8 dB mid range boost starting at 1K in the flat position. Depending on how you set the roll off switch, the rise point changes between 500Hz and 1K Hz.
The 602 .... jeeze! Look at the curve on that one !!! ... A typical "smile curve", with an 8dB boost at 100Hz going down to flat until it reaches 1K again where theres another boost of 8 db to 3.5K where it goes to a huge 10dB boost extending out to 14.5K where it rolls off.. I'm not too sure about that boost starting at 1K ... I usually don't like that much 1K in anything .. !
Are the import duties to India very high or is the shipping that is bumping up the prices to you ?? Perhaps the combination of the two? Depending on which it is, pehaps a RO member would be willing to purchase some SP C4's for you and arrange to ship them to you. There has to be a work around this problem..

I really dont have much of a choice on that now. Maybe the 1K would help in the kind of music im recording nowdaz. Metal.

The import duties are very high. Add to that the custom officials are currupt pigs. Getting someone i know to ship them across might be a solution. But i think it would be too much of a favour to ask.
And i dont really kn ow anyone that well. :wink:
But ive arranged for the budget. Onlt it's a lot more than what id pay in the west. Never mind.

No one has mentioned the ATM25 for the kick....its really really good...not the cheap model but the ATM25....klik and thump...the Audix D6 is a killer mic on kick....the angle at which you aim it inside the drum determines the klik...As Flethcher said, the Shure SM81 is a great mic capable of many things...the instrument list and sounds you mentioned would simply be meat for these little beauties.I have an old studio partner and acquaintence who records primarily belly-dancing music at this time ...he uses tambla players and all of that stuff and he still uses the Sm81's we were using 15 years ago...they just sound great.Do yourself a favor and spend the cash on these and you'll never regret it or look back from that point on.

If your looking for a pair of overheads that are versatile on acoustic guitar, then check out the AKG 535. I think they are one of the most under-rated condeser mics on the market.
They aren't too shabby on vocals either.
I tend to shy away from the Oktava stuff. I have experienced about a 50% failure rate om them. But, I do have thier ribbon model that comes in handy often.
