I've been thinking about this for a long time and thought I'd get some opinions from you guys.
The Plan:
Portable Part: Assuming I can take lines from the bands mixer.
Alesis HD24
Mackie 1604 Mixer (or bigger)
PatchBay (easy connections)
4 603s for choirs without mixers
couple of 57s, 58s just in case.
couple/three RNCs
If the band has nothing (no mixer) then I'll have to punt. Maybe get the Harvey recommended "do it all" mics.
Home Setup:
PC with Logic or CubaseSX and Mackie 824 monitors.
Good sound card (just for mixdown and mastering)
Any thoughts?
What's the going rate for this kind of service?
My budget is around 8 to 10 g's.

Finally upgraded to a TASCAM 38-8 about two weeks ago. About a million times difference.
Awhile back about five years ago when a came into some money I was going to go for two ADATS and a Mackie 24/8. It's good stuff from what I checked out back then. That Mackie is the first board I'd go for if I could afford it. The price has come down considerably on the used market. I've seen pristine boards WITH the meter bridge go for as little as $1600.
The pre-s are top notch, but I've heard from some other analog heads like me that they sound rather brittle and harsh. Don't know, I've never heard them.
'Course the money got used for something "more whorthwhile". I was married at the time.
If you're buying a 24-track digital machine you really ought to have at least an eight bus board for any eventuality that may come up. It also saves upgrading expenses later down the road.

Would a computer-based system be out of the question? For that kind of money you can nail together a very serious rack-mount Windows system. Hell, if you're doing no more than 8 tracks at a time you might be able to get by with a Mac for just a few thousand dollars more.

I would not use a Mackie to pass signal to tape or disk. Contrary to the ad hype (IMO) the pre amps are not top notch, or even middle notch. Mackies are great for monitoring but not great for signal to tape / disk. You would be better off getting a stack of ART dual MP's and a laptop with a firewire audio interface and external hard disk. You should be able to pick all that up for under 4 or 5K. The ADAT HR 24 will be a door stop in 2 or 3 years and with a computer set up you can upgrade in pieces as the gear becomes outdated. F-F-F-Fats.
