No they are not an upgrade of the venerable NS 10's. I have not used these …. but the reviews I’ve seen state they are ok for up to mid level monitoring but at high levels they crap out. Someone posted a link to an interview with the designed of the NS 10’s on RO last month and he said that the NS 10’s weren’t initially designed as a studio speaker but they caught on with recordists because of their sound. The rest is history.

I'm begining to think that i'm the only one who owns these. I can't really compare them to other monitors, because these are the onlt true monitors I've ever owned. Did they discontinue these?

Actually they translate pretty well. My biggest problem is always getting the correct amount of bass guitar, but I think this can be attributed to the control room. I am happy with the detail of these also, I can hear punches and reverb tails clearly. And as far as being loud, they certainly are when need be. The only problem is that when they are loud and you have say, a bass drum pumping through them, you get a blast of air in the face from the portholes. I usually take that as a cue to turn them down.

I also have a pair of these. I use mine with a Sub and the low filters on, the air blast does not happen at all in this configuration. If fact as part of a 3 way system they are fantastic. They are very clear and great at finding low level faults like noises or buzzes.

I think they translate fine and most of my stuff ends up on TV for broadcast and it comes over great.

I have had no problems with the MSP10.

Yamaha make great reliable gear, unlike my sub (event) that I have just got back from repair for 2 months.

PS they have been recently updated to the MSP10 Studio, but im not sure what they changed. Look much the same.
