I have a 001 system with an Athlon 1800XP and an Asus A7M266 mobo: works like a dream (except for the Wave Driver that now I have uninstalled); my advice would be to log on the Digi's web site at the User Conference and search for a thread named "Best system for digi 001/002 under $1000" in the Windows forum; it's a complete and updated list off all the HW components for both CPUs, so you'll have an overview of the two system with relative prices; I'd go with the Athlon anyway, since most of the PTLE users on the DUC have gotten better results out of Athlons than P4s (including me), and with newer mobos you could go up to a 2800 barton processor for monstruous power while saving money.

I currently have a dual boot system set up with Win 98SE on partition 1 and Win XP Pro on partition 2; the reason of this is because though I almost exclusively work on XP (with Pro Tools 5.3.1) there's some plug-ins and audio apps that aren't available on XP yet (or won't be), so I still keep a 98SE partition where I have Pro Tools 5.1.1 set up and my 2 track editing and Mastering softwares.

Working on XP is a breeze though: not a single crash, ultra stable and faster than the same app on 98SE. The dual boot option hasn't given me any problems; if you need to know how email me and I'll get into the details.

Dual booting is quite simple and you don't need any partition magic software to do it.

Create the drive with two partitions. Use 98 to create the two. Format the first partition as FAT32. Install 98.

Install Xp on the second partition and the next time you boot you will get a prompt to choose what OS you want to boot into!

Opus is right. I would like to add a few more things:

1) create the Win 98 partition bigger (say 70% of the whole drive) than the Xp's so that you can eventually store files in it (as a parking area) and you'll be able to acces them from both OS, as 98Se doesn't even recognize the existence of the XP NTFS partition, and you cannot access XP files and folders when in 98 mode.

2) format the XP partition as NTFS (this could be obvious), so that the two OSs will have minimum interaction.
