Last night I recorded a song for one of my friends. He raps, but it's NOT gangsta rap, so please be open minded to listening. I've only done a premix and was hoping if i can have some suggestions. I used a little hardware compression coming in, haven't used any software compression yet. I don't think it needs to be, but let me know if you think it does. On the verses, I made a copy and made a +/- stereo delay - and mixed it in 6db lower so it's just subtle. On the Hook, I had him rap a double. On the double, I did a +/- stereo delay and kept it at the same level so it's much louder. If I can have opinions on what you might do to mix it better, I'd appreciate it.
The other big problem I'm having is the ESSSSSSSS'ing.
I have some plugins that are supposed to De-Es, but I haven't used it yet. Do I highlight the whole vocal track and run the de-esser? Or do I only highlight the parts in the track that have the SSS sound.
I'd really appreciate any help/comments given as I'm new to recording and feedback, even bad feedback, will only get me better.

Oh, quick reference on my gear.
MXL v67g mic
Behringer autocom compressor
Behringer ub802 mixer
delta 66 sound card
adobe audition
I know my hardware is very entry level, but it's all I had budgeted.

I grooved to it. I am not hating. He is not the best lyricist or rapper. The production is not the best. But you have energy and skillz that cannot be denied.
I know this post is more about the engineering, but I think that the lyrics don't really "match" sample "Dead or Alive." Eric B could have been sampled on the chorus: "Ch-Ch-Ch-Check out my melody." or something like that.
Keep up the work, bro'.

It sounds better than most indie hip-hop I've heard. I think your're on the right track with the mix. I'd try to "warm" up the lead vocal a bit to give it more presence.
Who did the instrumental music/sampling for this song?
