Hey RO'ers, I wanted to run this by you and see what you all think. Lately, I have noticed that there are certain people in this world who want nothing more than for someone to fail. We are a small independent label trying to make our mark in the world of hip hop and we've just now started to generate a buzz for our music in our local area, but lately we have gotten some "personally directed" comments on the guestbook page of our website. It seems to me that whoever is leaving the comments must be someone that we have either worked with in the past and the relationship just didn't pan out and now they're taking shots at this label and its artists. Has anyone ever experienced this type of negativity from someone that they have worked with, and if so how did you go about handling this situation? It discourages me personally because I have sunk a lot of time, effort, dedication and money into getting this company started off in the right direction, and all I asked was for the artists that I work with to take their careers seriously and put in the effort so that we all can be successful, no half-steppin! I've decided to just let whoever it is continue to vent, rant, rave, and bitch and continue to do what I think is right for my label and my artists. Please let me know what you think of this situation. Thanks.

There are indeed people in the world today who take pleasure in sniping at other people for what ever reason. Just read any web board and see what some people are capable of (this web board would be a good one as there have been some long on going rantings and ravings on certain subjects and some of them have gotten so heated the moderator had to close the topic).

I think that in your case if you are allowing people to write comments on your web site you are going to occasionally get some weird responses. They maybe from a disgruntled former employee or someone that did not get what they wanted from you personally or your company. Or they maybe from someone who doesn't like hip-hop for whatever reason.

You have two choices. You can erase comments you don't like or you can answer them truthfully on the website and hope that others will understand what is happening.

It will do no good to get into a long winded written battle with someone who has an ax to grind with you or your company. People can hide behind many different web persona's and I personally know a person who has 15 different web identities and he uses them in different situations. So you could conceivable get different comments and postings from the same person.

Do what your inner voice tells you is the best course of action and let us know how things are going.

Good advice.

I don't deal with all situations the same way. As a business owner, your reputation is ultimate. You are absolutely right to value it and seek to protect it.

Back when I was a private tutor, I helped this particular student go from Ds to As in Algebra very quickly. Instead of being happy for her, the teacher accused her of cheating! This pseudo-rock star (you know the type, guy gets the teaching gig while he is waiting to be some famous guitarist) answers her rebuttal of my mother hired a tutor for me with the following: "Well, he must have shown you how to cheat." Starting pitcher getting shelled, and hating on the closer who saves the game.

When this news got back to me, I could have simply said nothing. But in this case, I had several clients' children at that particular school, and several potential clients. I wanted nothing like this to even get a hint of legitimacy to it.

I told her to relay the following information to him:

"If you say anything about me again of this nature, I will sue you for slander. My reputation is all I have in this type of business."

That was the end of that. Raised the ante on him.

If the vinegar that these fools are spitting could be viewed by anyone as anything more than some random Internet fool spouting off, then you should address it.

If they are speaking on actual situations (promo shows, contracts, etc.), tell your side of what went down. You don't want people to think your outfit is shady in anyway.

Thanks for the reply guys, I think that I will handle this situation in the only way that I know how, which is to explain to them my side of the situation. I understand when people feel as though they are being left behind, and you're still moving forward, that they may lash out and try to bring you down or give you a bad rep. I agree that I do not want anyone to think that I am doing anything shady in regards to my company, I'm just out here trying to make a name for myself, the artists which I represent, and the city I live in. It just pains me to know that I tried helping someone out with their own career (musically), and they take these shots at my label from behind computer screens. Thanks for the advice.

I couldn't help notice this topic. I haven't read the other post here, but will later. Good to see some support here.
RO has been under attack more than once. Some people are nasty and go to long lengths to hurt others. Its human behaviour.
If you have a guestbook, or other ways for your compitition or rivals to get at you, they will. If people could kill online they would. If you give them the opportunity, expect the worst. It will keep coming until you are gone, or the opportunity for them is gone.

That being said... If you would like RO to help promote your business (no chrage), submit your business info in our submit news area and I will start thinking of more ways to help you and other indie labels out there.

Thanks audiokid, I will submit my busines info as soon as possible. I understand that people will try to hurt you in anyway possible if they can, because they may feel as though you are moving in a positive direction and that they may be left behind. Please let me know where to send my business info to so that I may get it to you as quick as I can. I am always looking for ways to make my small label grow.Thanks.

I have no idea about your service (yet... with a smile and push). I will gladly promote musician ways to be discovered.
If a suggestion is helpful or needed for your... (full page) article... Tell us why your company would be good for my music, the sound your are looking for, links to your site, examples etc etc .

You should be able to use html in the submit box. If for some reason you have trouble, PM me and I will give you an email address where you can send it. You should get some good traffic from this. All the best.
