It's actually 2 cards but the Frontier Designs Dakota/Montana combination does this. It also has the spdif ins and outs and full word clock implimentation.

I want to use the alesis HD24 converters for the ins and outs of my daw. So I need somthing that can accept 24 channels of light pipe, that would mean I would need three sets of light pipe ins and outs. I am going to check out the rme digiface but meanwhile can anyone suggest the best way to do what I am asking? What is the best way to hook the HD24 up to a daw?

yes, all the motus 2408 have 3 ch of light pipe good for 24 ch of audio

I wouldn't do this at all, but you certainly can.

Plug the Lightpipe outs of the HD24 into the Lightpipe ins of the sound card. Plug the Lightpipe ins of the HD24 to the Lightpipe outs of the sound card.

Done.

Except for one thing... the deck can't be in playback and record at the same time. I'm guessing that the converters work from the logic of the deck.

For what it is worth, I've heard nothing good about the sound of those converters. My recommendation would be for you sell the Alesis, and for you to buy a sound card and a better converter set.

As with all things audio, there are differing opinions.

Most ADAT chips for all products are sourced from Alesis.. so the primary difference in converters that use ADAT ligtpipe are due to the digital clock and in the analog circuitry employed but all of this doesn't mean dookie if you don't have great mics and pres in the first place.

You know those 2 wheel trotting race horse buggies? Imagine having one of those hitched up to a plow horse. That's great converters with crap front end.

The HR24 should be fine for converters to get signal into the multitrack side of your DAW but you should consider something spdif or aes/ebu for your monitoring (2 track) side. As your system and needs grow you may want to upgrade by getting better clocking or converters.

One advantage to using the HR24 is you can record most of your stuff there and then transfer to the DAW to mix and edit ..

I am using an RME / Nuendo Digiset (I think that's what it's called?) It has been great for me.
