Ok, so here's the deal: I'm looking to start doing some mastering, and I'm a using a Digidesign 001. I plan on going Digital out of the 001 into a Crane Song HEDD, into a Manley Vari-mu, back into the Crane Song , and into the digital in of the 001. My question is this: Will this completely bypass any potential quality loss the 001 could add to the sound? Is there anything else the 001 will be putting into the sound that might be of comprimising quality? I know there's plenty of people that would like to say "The 001 sucks, get rid of it", but I would like a technical reason as to why the 001 would affect the sound quality.

The only real issue with the 001 is that you will no be able to do anything at 96/88.2 KHz. I use an HD system as my workstation for mastering (about a year), and get good results. Especially with the Vari-Mu, you should be able to do some nice work.
Also, I'm not sure if you can use the Massenburg EQ with an RTAS system. BY FAR the best software EQ I've heard in ProTools.
email me if you have any other specific questions.

Well, it will probably be ok depending on what your expect from it?

I had the 2192 for literally a day or two... Nice piece.
Can't remember specifically why, but I decided to go with Lavry.
I wonder if it couldn't run the A-D and D-A at different rates...

The Digi shouldn't be a problem as long as you're not using their converters... The HEDD's are a bit on the... "flavorful" side for mastering (IMO, of course), but I know a lot of happy users. And it might have just the flavor you're looking for.
