So I had my project in Sonar all spruced up, saved, and ready to export. I save a quick .wav to my SD card to play through another medium to check my mixing, saved one last time, and closed down Sonar because I wouldn't be back anytime soon.

When I finally returned, I re-opened the project to make some minor adjustments and came across a major problem.

It won't work =

Everything looks and works fine except for one problem, no playback. The audio engine keeps resetting to "stopped", and clicking play turns it to "start" for a millisecond, then back to stop, and the tracking bar goes nowhere. All the Audio files are in place, everything on the program itself is set right because all my other projects work. Is there something wrong with this particular project file? Is perhaps to much CPU use causing the audio engine to automatically cease to function? When I try to export the song as an audio file I get a "The audio engine unexpectedly stopped" message, and the export aborts.

Any help is welcome, please, I don't want to have to redo this all!

I'm stumped....I've had projects get corrupted in earlier version of Sonar, but not to the point of no playback. How frequently are you set up to autosave? 10 or 15 minutes is a good idea, you'll never lose more than that much work if something goes nuts on you. Have you asked for help on the Sonar Forum at Cakewalk's site?

If you do not have this app, get it and run it.
Take a walk down memory lane:

The link goes to the Cakewalk Audio Finder tool. If there are any issues with associated files with this project, this tool should be able to identify some of these concerns.

As a note of caution, if you do not have a regular back-up routine for recording projects already in place, this is almost exactly the correct time to start one.

The correct time would be before you begin the project, but maybe it isn't too late.

It is backwards compatible to SONAR 1.

Is this going to work with S6 or S7? The link only lists S1 through S5. Thanks for the heads up though, I still use S3 along with S6 and was unaware of this.

I want to ask why do you do this, run multiple versions, but I'm afraid you might answer:)

Your fears are come to pass! I use w2k for my OS and plan on sticking with it as ong as possible. There's a bunch of reauthorization hassles with upgrading to XP I don't feel like dealing with, and I like w2k better than XP overall. When I upgraded to S5 and then S6, I was only able to save a .cwp file about 50% of the time, which gets frustrating. I called Cakewalk, but they don't offer S6 support run on w2k. One day I had an idea to create the project in S3 and then work on it in S6. Flawless. That's why :)

One reason the audio engine will stop is when you overload it - check to be sure your latency setting is the same. Also check to see if you might somehow have an invalid plugin, or a plugin that's become corrupt.

I would save a copy of the project to a new name just for testing, mute and/or remove each plugin one at a time and see if/when it starts playing again. Another thought - you wouldn't happen to have a file in the project loaded from a removable media would you? Just a guess, but that might cause problems since it isn't a fixed drive letter, and might be seen as more than just offline or unavailable media.
