System-Link was designed to sync, and control a secondary computer also running Cubase5.2/SX by using the digital I/O as the connection.

The philosophy behind it is to be able to spread the processing load over multiple computers. For example, you could use your main computer to run your DAW sequencer, and then a second computer to run your VSTi instruments, thus reducing the strain on the main computer's CPU. I have heard that you can also run your plug-ins on one of the linked computers, which is really cool imho!

The technology as I understand it, uses one bit of the digital signal, so if you are running at 24-bits, one of the bits is used to establish the link, then you would the remaining 23-bits left over for the processing.

So in theory, can this also work remotely from anywhere (ie: lan, dsl, & etc.) where there's one of these connections? :)

No, it can not work remotely as the sync is done via digital connection only..DSL etc etc etc is not a system link protocol.

It's not X-Link which is a type of link between certain pieces of gear that recognize this.

Only SPDIF, AES or Optical can work in this scenario. Also it has to be a 24 bit card.
