Hey all. I have a question that may be a bit silly/rudimentary but I'd appreciate the input.
I have an Apogee Duet, a Mackie 1402VLZ, and various synths/drum machines/mics, etc. I am looking to buy a small sampler. Here's my issue: I only have 2 outs on the Duet, and 4 ins. The 2 outs are going directly to my monitors. But, I want to be able to sample out from the Duet into the drum machine that I buy.
I previously had things setup where the monitors went out from the Mackie, and the duet went out, into the Mackie. The problem is, when I have the Mackie also going back out into the Duet, it feeds back. My question is, is there a way that I can set this up so that I can record into my DAW, but also record into the sampler from the DAW? I'm willing to buy an additional mixer if that's part of the solution.. I'm trying to avoid buying a new interface. Again, I know this is a very rudimentary question, and feel silly asking it.. but would appreciate your help!

Are you happy that when you replay samples through the Duet into the drum machine they will also play through the monitors? If so, the simple thing to do is to connect the drum sampler inputs (assuming they are balanced) and the monitor inputs in parallel to the Duet outputs. Use balanced T-leads or adaptors for this. You will need to make sure that the drum sampler that you choose will ignore its analog inputs unless it is loading new samples.
The more complex route is to use the Aux system of your mixer. I would need to know more detail on how you presently use the mixer before advising on the best way of setting it up for loading samples. Respond on the T-connection method first.

I'm not certain this applies to you but I have at least 20,000 hours into sampling and midi based music. I use an Akai MPC Renaissance today. The hardware of MPC doesn't hold samples like the old days (they store ITB) but it reacts with the DAW incredibility well . There is zero latency with mine on a dedicated USB port), (64 buffer at 64 triplets at 180 bpm no sweat!)
Its very well thought out. You can sample using its built in interfacing or load samples in it, use it like a midi drum machine or a plug-in . Its hard to explain all it does but in a nut shell, its everything I want in a sampler/ drum controller today. You should try and get one to demo for more than a weekend. I think you will be blown away.
