I know these are relatively low end comps, but Im just a humble aumatuer noise-maker, looking for professional advice. These will be used for taking care of toms, mostly. Or, perhaps youve heard better results on other instruments. There is also Drawmer's DL241 which is a bit more, but still in my range. I talked to Fletcher about this, and he raved about the RNC as being very clear. He didnt have any MX-30's in, and couldn't comment. Again, Im just an amatuer, so any advice is very much appreciated. Im familiar with a few of the folks on this forum, mostly from publications and recordings, and can say that Ive learned so much from everyones work, that Id just like to take this opportunity to say thanks for all the inspiring work. :)

The RNC sounds a little more neutral to my ears, leaving more of the original sound intact. The MX30 has a little more of that VCA "snap/hardness" and yields more coloration. They both sound very nice...the gate and limiter on the MX30 are a great added bonus that the RNC does not have, and you will be hard strapped to find a stereo pair of gates and limiters (of the Drawmer Quality) for the remaining price difference of a 2ch. If you want your buck to go further IMO go with the Dramwer...if you want just one or two really awesome compressors and don't care about the other features, go with the RNC. See the MX30 here: Protools for Palm
And the RNC compressor here: Protools for Palm
Good Luck!
