Hey folks,
This is my first post and I hope I’m not asking too much, but some feedback on my new self-produced solo album would be much appreciated. The album is primarily instrumental and leans pretty heavily into shoegaze and post rock territory. The album is called The Work. (link removed)

Thanks so much.

The usual format is to post one song for feedback, preferably a work in progress. I doubt many are going to play your whole album that you've already released.

Sorry about that. I saw two other full album posts in the forum right before I posted. I didn’t intended to break protocol. Thanks for letting me know.

i listened to all of the first song and a minute of the 2nd and 20 seconds of the 3rd. sounds fine but not the kind of music i like. nothing special about it for me. seems like just about anyone with a computer and a few hundred dollars worth of software could produce it. but what do i know? i'm a dinosaur.

Well, thanks for listening. I appreciate your time.

I did exactly what Kurt did and in general
share his opinion. What I want to suggest is that you check out David Bowie - particularly the stuff he produced in Berlin. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berlin_Trilogy Take note of how your stuff might compare and contrast as they share some similarities but you’ll also get a better sense of what you lack as well. It will help you grow as a music maker to do a deep dive and study this.

Thanks for your time and feedback. I’m a big Bowie fan and that is probably my favorite Bowie era. Eno is also a big influence. However, for this project my influences were bands like My Bloody Valentine and Cocteau Twins. I know I haven’t quite gotten there in production quality (my resources are pretty limited), but I think I’ve nailed the feeling. Fortunately, the record is getting good reviews in publications and on sites that focus on shoegaze/dream pop/postrock. Thank you - I really do appreciate your time.

What websites and publications are giving this good reviews? Are these echo-chambers where you trade likes? Are these representative of real audiences in the wild? What’s your assessment of the quality of the music and the quality of the production (out of 10) of your tracks ? And where do you want to go - what standard to you want to get to - and do you have a plan or an understanding of how to get there? I can give you a brutally honest assessment of everything I’ve ever recorded or written - and I can tell you what I need to do to get better and what I did wrong or right. Do you have that sense with your music?

I understand that I have a lot of room to grow. Admittedly my recording setup is not a top notch studio. I make do with what I can afford and I spend as much time as I can on my music (I have a full time job, wife and young son). I didn’t join this forum looking for a fight. I was looking for some constructive feedback. So far, all I’ve heard is “You suck.” Nothing positive and nothing specific to work on. I do appreciate the time anyone spends listening to my stuff, but I think this group is just not for me. Thanks

I asked you some questions that would give me some context to know where to start giving you feedback. Do you not understand how that would be necessary to be able to give you feedback?

Its sad how the new gen are only looking for info they want to hear. Little do they know how many people on this forum have written and produced great music over the years.
erk... living in the cancel culture isn't fun...

it’s hard to even know where or how to start..... just trying to get a read on where they thought they were in the process was an existential threat to them.
