Hi all,
I fall into the music hobbiest category and appreciate any feedback I can get. I get together with friends from across Canada every few years in my basement music space and we record a collection of songs. They all leave and I get stuck with trying to put them together - i.e., mixing and mastering. I ask for the group's feedback along the way but sometimes I wish it were more informed ( and I were more experienced ).
Here's where I am at with one of the songs. Any thoughts you have on areas I should be focused on to improve the overall mix are appreciated. I do feel that at this point I have done what I am able to do on timing and pitch so while your comments on these areas are appreciated, that's not an area I will be focusing on.
Thanks in advance for your feedback!
As FYI I am working in Cubase and have applied the Maximizer insert on the final output track. I've found that I need to tweak mixes after applying Maximizer so I appreciate any thoughts or experience you may have on that process as well.
Best
Jeff

The bass drum has a lot of low end and makes your compression on the mix to pump.
The Vocals could have more HF and the reverb makes them sounding old.
The bass synth takes too much space in the mix.. it's level should go down specialy with the long notes..
Some vocals aren't ending notes at the same time but it's a minor thing
The electric solo should be more present and in the center.
The fadeout a bit longer..
Now most of it derives from opinion. Take what you want and forget the rest ;)

Welcome to recording.org.
I appreciate the welcome. I've responded to the comments received... I think I will have another listen tomorrow but already this seems more coherent. Thanks for the input and don't be shy if you have additional comments.

The electric solo sounds a bit harsh.. could use a bit of delay or reverb.
In the arrangement I'm not sure about all the stopping instrument phrases in the verses but it's a minor thing really... I just like when it flows.
But man, the vocals are much better and the bassdrum found its place ;)

It's common to mix with a compressor or limiter on the masterbuss. It help puting everything in place and you remove it before you send it for the mastering.
I'll listen to the mix at the studio tonight ;)
