My M-Audio Keystation 49e just arrived in the mail today. I have an extensive background in audio recording technology, but this is my first step into the world of MIDI.
I hooked it up using a USB cable to my computer (Dell Dimension 8400 - 2.8Ghz, 512 MB RAM. Yes I know I need more RAM :] ), and started up Neundo 3. I then added a new MIDI track to a blank project, and armed it for recording so I could just play the keyboard and monitor it through my studio monitors. Everything sounded great tone-wise, but the latency I was experiencing is horrible.
On the standard GM Sounds, I'm experiencing a little under a second of latency. However, if I add a basic soft-synth (Any of the ones included with Nuendo for example - Embrace, VB-1, etc.) to the track, the delay jumps up to about 2 seconds.
I'm using an EMU-0404 as my sound card, and haven't had any latency problems with normal audio recording. How can I fix (or reduce) the latency I'm experiencing, so I can actually overdub MIDI tracks with this keyboard on existing songs I've created without totally getting off time?

Sounds to me like poor ASIO drivers. I don't know why it would be an issue but I have heard that some people have had to use ASIO4all with some of the lower end EMU cards. I don't understand why they would ship it with poor ASIO drivers in the first place. At any rate, you could try lowering the buffer to 256 samples or less. That should lower the latency but it may also cause clicking and other noise. Play with it till it works.

This sounds like it would be a problem with the software. Generally USB MIDI devices don't introduce latency, but to rule that possiblity out, hook up the MIDI out on the keyboard to the MIDI IN jack on the 0404 and try using that as your MIDI interface.
NOTE: I don't know if the MIDI out on the 49e transmits MIDI data from the keyboard...the description on the site describes it more like a MIDI thru.
Anyway, if you don't notice any difference in the latency then the problem is most likely in the software. Nuendo is great, but I don't use it. I use Cubase SX and there have been MIDI problems reported for it. You might want to check out forum.nuendo.com or forum.cubase.net for more information. You will most likely get more help from there since they are forums specifically for your software.
