That's right! And please make that an active DI. Why? A line input is typically 10,000 ohms impedance. Most pickups need to see an input impedance of at least one million ohms or your instrument will sound like crap since the pickups are being " loaded down"! Such as a musical instrument amplifier input or a direct active DI. Now if you have a pre-amplified active bass that you have to periodically change the battery internally, it has a lower output impedance and you can get away with a line input but still not recommended.

". Turn the instrument down and screw the DI?

Use a little high pass filtering and some limiting. Yes, high pass filtering as in " low-cut". Consider getting a " Bass Pod" or a bass " SansAmp" DI. If you want to accentuate what the bass player is doing, add a small presence peak. Maybe suck a small amount of 250 hertz out? No plug-ins needed.

How low can you go???
