Wassup folks!

I'm in the market for a new set of studio monitors. I had some of the original RP8's YEARS ago. I had to sell them be cause I needed the money and it tore me in half. I'm looking for a new set of speakers but I've been using phones so long I don't even know what to go with. Can anyone drop some insight on what's good now for home studio use? It took me months to side on the Rokits the first time I got them. I was lucky because I lived near a GC and could go in and check out all the speakers in person... now I can't. Thanks for any helpful advice!

the rokits sounded overtly bright at GC (attleborogh, MA) to me. The yamaha's sounded mid rangey when i took them home. my boss loves the yams and i could live w/ them. i brought 'em back and settled on a pair of makie h28's(mk2), shoulda probably got the 6's, but whatever. it's all about the room.

demo rooms in GC are probably larger than an average home CR, so it's tough to judge. I took the yams, hr8's, the hr8(mk2's) home to try via credit. I settled on the mk2's cuz my favorite stuff sounded the best in my room on them.
i've used some questeds, and meyers, which are way outa that range, and found that the the depth of the mix was way better. again, in a different room.

just didn't like the krk stuff. it was way too 'chimey', and it was a zepplin track i know well the dude played. just too much, they sounded like the berringer 8" offering which, to me, has the same tendencies, w/ deeper bass response. yamaha isn't a bad route, but after about 50hrs mix time, they seem a bit vague when doing narrow band eq's. compared to the mackie meyer questeds.

I'm an old JBL user from way back. I found the KR K's to work well for me in conjunction with my old JBL's. I've got a pair of Rok-it's and a pair of V6's. Largely prior to the takeover when the control room monitors were first introduced. It's all so subjective. Others sounded good. These spoke to me. I'm certainly not a Yamaha speaker fan. Adam's not bad. DYNAUDIO quite nice. Westlake's if you want to spend that much. So do you want an active monitor or do you want passive crossovers and your choice of amplifiers?

I have the KRK RP8G2's and I work well with them. How many hours do you spend at the desk? After a couple of hours or just to change up my perspective I will switch to headphones. I wouldn't go as far to say that the krk's cause ear fatigue, but I will say that all the bass you will ever want in a mix is already there. They are probably a little more bass heavy than some comparitive 8 inch monitors out there, but that's why I wanted 8's to begin with (I can't mix well with a sub woofer setup). At low volumes, there range is pretty damn good, which is what I love about mixing quietly at 1130 on weeknights and still not bothering the neighbors. You can go full volume for final final mixes. I spend more time writing and recording music than mixing so for me these have been wonderful, and I immediately know if that bass sound or kick is going to sit pretty well in my mix. Only gripe I have is that they sit a little too close to where I sit to give me the perfect sound, but that's no reflection on the monitor, just my small recording studio.
As a side note i bought the gray version because yellow makes me punch people in the face and didn't match the lovely blue light thing I've got going on in my studio.
Those yamaha HS80's are probably a better speaker, but they are 110volt only and I live in a 220volt country and don't dig transformers on anything cept preamps and high end audio gear. I wish I could go back in time, grab my NS10's and zap back to the present! Those crappy old flat speakers made you work to get your mix right, but it paid off. My mixes sound too good out the box, and somehow it takes me more fooling around now because I know my monitors lie and make my junk sound better than it is.
