I have just received 2 external hard drives with program from a mastering client. They are USB type drives. I've hooked them up into my system. The computer (Dell 8200 PC, XP, pentium4, 512mb RAM, 1.7 gig) says it "sees" them & installed them.

They do not show up on "my computer" though.
I do not seem to be able to open them.

What can I do next?

Thanks!
Don

Do they show up in "device manager"? Is your USB controller(s) showing up OK in device manager? Do your controllers need modification/update?

Try "right clicking" "computer" in device manager then clicking "check for hardware changes"?

Try going to the web site of the drive maker for more instructions?

go into your control panel if classic view select administrative tools if category view click performance and maint then administrative tools then open up computer managment and then select disk management. When you do this it should show you the status of the drive. It may just need to be assigned a drive letter. Lets hope so. If the drive was formated on a mac it may not be readable from windows. Don't qoute me on that though I don't know piss about macs, just a guess. Bottom line that should at least give you an indication of why the drive isn't showing up

my computer at home wont recognize more than about 6 connected usb devices at one time. The tell is the sound it makes when you plug it in. When its ok you get 1 'bong', when its an error you get a slapback 'bong' pitched down a bit.

Did you try unplugging some drives and then plugging in the new ones?

Lastly, some drives have their own stupid software to phycially read from the drive. Check into that. What type of drive is it?

When I went into disc management, it told me drives are:
1) unallocated
2) not initialized

I do get the proper "bong" sound when the drives are plugged in. These are the only 2 USB devices I have plugged into the system at this time.

Maybe they are MAC drives, I'm trying to find out from the source (client).
One drive is a Seagate, the other is a Simpletech.

The USB controllers (there are 2) are showing up. Also 2 "mass storage devices" & 2 "source hubs"
