Hi all, brand new here. Hope I'm asking in the right place.

I've been in live sound for ages but am just building up my first recording rig.

I have a pair of AKG 414's and would like to complement them with some better preamps than my Soundcraft K1 console (which seems fine for general band tracking but I'd like something a bit special for vocal overdubs etc).

After trawling the web for a bargain I'm beginning to wonder about building a dual one from a kit. Being comfortable with a soldering iron, it seems like a good idea.

Can anyone comment or make suggestions about my options here? If I was spending US dollars I would be considering something approaching $1000.

Thanks,

The Hamptone is a seriously remarkable preamp. Since you're in Australia, I would be looking at the JLM gear. I'm sure its cheaper there for you than us in the states. I've heard one of their pres and they are really really good. The one I heard had the John Hardy-like op-amp setup in it. The 990 I think it was based on.
