I know that API seems to be the pre to get for great rock drums....does a Sebatron also fit in that category?

I don't think you'll have a problem.
The Sebatron is wider than the API so you may find it useful to utilize the ' low cut ' for some aspects of the kit .... O/H's for example.
Toms would sound nice to ,, all the Harsh edges are taken off without the program slowing down.

Can I get that colour on the kick and snare?

Yes.
Because of the high SPL of close micked drums ,, you'll have plenty of range to work with over the three Pad settings.
Try each one to get an idea of how the pre can soften the transients.
At 0db Pad the colour of the pre is maximum and the high EQ bands are quite thin.
Thin enough to commit to on the way in.

For a kit I was going to use the Sebatron to mic a kick, snare, and OH's. Then the rest of kit I would be using my on board pres. Do you think a Sebatron would be the thing for me?

Yes.
Don't forget the flexibility of the D.I.
