This looks more like a bedroom. Earthtone carpet, berber though it may be, white high gloss trim and light yellow(earhtone again) wall color? Many a many an apartment has had this scheme.

By the shape of the ceiling I'd even guess an upstairs residential room.

Just to split hair, look at the top right of each photo. See were the ceiling line starts to turn down? Same damn wrinkles in both pictures!!! These shots are taken in the same room, on the same side, in the same pair of underwear!!!

On a positive note, those color coordinated moving blankets are awesom!!!

Wow a tough crowd, and funny how none of you gave your how I would do it different opinions. I don't see any constructive advice or and explanations at all. I would think that most musicians and or professional recording engineers would offer more then shallow opinions, which in my opinion makes this thread a waste of space.
I can not help with how to Mic drums because I never went to school for sound engineering.
The music sounds the same because its all death metal and thats how it sounds.
How can you review the quality of the MySpace MP3

Sad, very sad and unhelpfull to anyone looking for help.

If it works for you, then that's all that matters.

I'll tell you this, I've gotten much better sounds from live rooms (concrete walls, paneling, etc.) than from those that are overly deadened.

To be fair, I've also recorded many, many crappy sounds in both places (nobody's perfect).

If you are able to get the sound you want, then it doesn't matter, really.

As far as mic placement, again, if you are getting the sound you want, do what you like. There are many articles and rules regarding placement, but then, many good sounds also come from 'happy accidents' (I'm not implying anything by that statement, btw).

The overheads are off-axis, but perhaps you moved them before taking the picture? Try moving them higher above the kit and angling them down.

Anyway, all that really matters is that you are having a good time doing what you enjoy!

Multoc: Sad, very sad. You led us astray!

I did not know it belonged to anyone that anyone knew or that was actually a part of these forums....sorry bwmac, my bad boss.

(Actually I thought it was multocs' room :).)

Hay Space, no problem here. It's not my studio and I don't know the guy from Adem. I just thought all of the post didn't offer much positive and the worst part is I don't have much experience in drum mic placement.

I am a musician with a home studio and probably don't do any better then this guy; but like (bent) said, if it works who cares. I do agree with the overly dead room comment, but I have discovered the hard way that its easier to add reverb then to take it out.

If I was rude to anyone I apologize.

I will add that I have seen many here post pics of their studios and this one is overly sterile.

BTW here is a good artical on drum mic placement

Hey BWMac -

There are SO many topics on these forums that deal with proper drum mic'ing and acoustics. I personally did not feel the necessity to go into that since I've typed no less than 5000 words on these subjects to date anyway.

I don't think that the lack of positive advice makes this topic or forum useless. It's more a matter of simply pointing out the obvious. If the guy that has this studio came on board and said:

"Hey...what the hell?! What's wrong and what would I do to fix it?"

Many of us would gladly give him/her advice. However, since that hasn't occured yet, we'll continue to laugh at his expense.

Cheers-
J
