hey....your upc code can come from anywhere......as long as your friends source is legit, you have no worries.......upc codes are tracked after you register them with soundscan, and other various entities........... If you are a small band odds are most stores are not going to take your release right away, so this really shouldnt be an issue you focus much attention on at this point........just play the shows, and if the music is good......people will get your CDs, maybe include a shoping cart system on your site where visitors can purchas your album, have it available at shows (this is where you will earn most of your keep early on, shows) and also try to get as many other websites as possible to stock your album!

Our project is a solo act (chick singer) who, many years ago, achieved a good amount of success then was out of the business for 20+ yrs.

Tower has said they will take our cd in on consignment.
We'll bring in our finished product and find our the deal's specifics.
I figured it wouldn't be that hard as she still has her previous stuff in stores.

Not knowing anything about the barcode bit, I'm worried that I'll do something that might hurt us later.

For those who don't know, the 'legit' route is to join the UCC ($750), who then allow you to create your own unique product numbers, 10,000 I think.
But there are entities found on the internet who will, one way or another, sell you a number.

The re-selling of numbers I believe is 'frowned' upon by the UCC, but is not covered by law.
Can anyone corroborate?

Anyway, we avoided paying the UCC $750 for now.

I had 500 CDs printed down here in Australia and the plant provided the barcode for a cost of $150.
