What Digi says about ram is this:
* 1GB Total System RAM minimum required, 2GB or more recommended
* 2.5GB Total System RAM minimum required for maximum track count with:
o Pro Tools HD
o Pro Tools LE with optional Music Production Toolkit 2, DV Toolkit 2, or Complete Production Toolkit
o Pro Tools M-Powered with optional Music Production Toolkit 2
1 gig is a bare minimum not what will make it work correctly on XP. For Vista those ram requirements are different yet.
The following page has some guidelines on specific hardware components.

Gertok: Have you visited the DUC lately? There are plenty of people using i7 quadcores. I think that those are the "go-to" cpu for PT8. Some are using Phenom quadcores with success. I'm currently using an Athlon x2 7750 BBE with reasonable success.
Definitely the more power the better. What seems to be at issue is that multicore support is still iffy at best. That is it still seems to run better on a single core though usage is much higher. I hope this one gets worked out.
At any rate, 7.4 is much more friendly still.

You should go to the Digi website and look at what they say they will support. Digi traditionally wants NOTHING to do with cutting edge technology. Not that a quad core is cutting edge any more. Never the less, if you want to be happy with PT you must go to Digi for their specs.
And research the hell out of whatever M-Audio dongle you decide on because at least half of them are frustrating crapola. There have been several mentions around these boards that PT8 is maybe not the way to go. Maybe M-Powered is slightly different or maybe not. Maybe PT8 has it's bugs worked out.
Caveat lector.
