Why is running at the lowest latency at all important for bouncing tracks?

I have know idea why it lock up when bouncing to disk but the only thing I have changed was the latency setting. When I put it back to a higher setting it bounces to dick fine.

You miss my point. There is NO REASON to have the latency screwed down that tight for any kind of mixing or bouncing to disc. All computers will bottom out at various points depending on the quality of the computer, it's OS optimization, and the quality and connection of the audio interface.

The only reason to ever screw the latency down as low as the machine will run smoothly, is to overdub a track and then all real studios just take a headphone mix off of their interface without screwing down the latency which will be zero on the interface no matter what the computer is set at. There are lots of entry level audio interfaces in the $500-600 range depending on how many inputs you require. MoTU is where I'd start looking. Also look at a Mackie Blackbird or Presonus something or other.

You set to low latency when you are tracking. With low latency, you won't be able to run much of any processing or plug-ins. That's why it works better when you increase the latency for that type of Processing & Bouncing, mixing, etc..

I don't know much about PT9 and 10 yet, but in PTLE8 Low Latency Mode is used in tracking to let you use the interface's input monitoring function. Apparently you don't have an interface, just a sound card. It may be that Low Latency Mode simply doesn't work properly without a proper audio interface.

WTF? You have to tell it to direct monitor? I don't remember having to do that with PT5 and an 001 but maybe my memory is dim. An interface should direct monitor regardless of what the computer is set up. If it doesn't that is just plain damn retarded.

PT8 will by default try to software monitor the inputs. Low Latency Mode switches it to hardware monitoring through a 002 or similar. It's a result of PT's legacy of being tied to specific known hardware I guess.

I find PT8 rather annoying and only use it when I'm paid to do so. I have a whole list of gripes. It doesn't have anything like a proper solo bus. The way it solos is it simply mutes all channels not being soloed, so if you try to solo a reverb return it mutes all the channels sending signal to the reverb.
