Check this out! The product itself is cool, but the implications are what I'm enamoured with. Computers are generally clunky, bloated, and relatively expensive. In my opinion far too 'open' for our needs in audio. I've been saying for years a closed, audio (video) only machine has a real place in our little corner of the world.

I've been impressed w smartphones and tablets ability to streamline the desktop recording experience, and in my opinion operate much more reliably.

This little device opens the door further by adding dedicated hardware to the recording process. While it's still tracks to a smartphone, (if I understand it correctly) many digital mixers and interfaces track directly to thumb drive.

Finally getting closer to an affordable RADAR type system or a Modern version of the aslesis or Mackie standalone hard disk recorders.

I know how this movie begins and ends.

ME: Spire, open the Line 6 Pod patch bay "The Doors" please.

SPIRE: I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave

ME: Spire! Open the Line 6 Pod patch bay "The Doors"!

SPIRE: I'm afraid I can't do that, Dave.

ME: Spire, play music by Strauss please.

(music swells as I smash Spire with a bone, stick, or mic stand, whichever is closest)

Lol I see that same script in a typical scenerio with me as well. This is a very consumer oriented product, but I think the potential is there for something that meets pro needs in a reliable and suitability connected way.

I would add to the script. "I cannot record Kyle, but there's a sale on Levi's, should I order a pair?".... (spire's last words)

Man, I used to drool over those Roland VS machines. I had (and still have) a tascam 424mk3. Breaking the 4 track simultaneous recording track count was a big deal back then at the entry level. Sill love those things.

I mean if you add editing, and MIDI, to any of the digital mixers that record multitrack, your there. They've got Dsp, some have motorized faders, touchscreen. It's like really close.

I'm enjoying what seems to be the exponential improvements, and innovation of this post 2015 era in recording technology.

I'm waiting for the day when those who came up on DAWs will look at that platform as those of us who came up in the tape and console age do: I can hear 'em... ten years from now:
"Back in my day, I was forced to use a big desktop computer to digitally record, we didn't have the 2"x2" cube that you kids have now.
We actually had to work on a computer with an external audio interface and mics to record and mix....". LOL.

Jean Luc Picard was expert on recording -
"PICARD: Computer, stop playback. Change the clarinet to an oboe. Continue recording.
(doorbell)
PICARD: Computer, pause playback. Come.
(Data and La Forge enter)
PICARD: Yes, gentlemen?
LAFORGE: Captain we'd like your permission to take the Engineering computer offline for a couple of hours. We're working on a new interface that would allow Data to act as an emergency backup in the event of a ship-wide systems failure.
DATA: In theory, my neural network should be able to sustain key systems until primary control is restored.
PICARD: It sounds like an intriguing experiment. I'll be interested to see the results. Permission granted.
LAFORGE: It's possible we may even be able to run secondary systems through Data. Weapons control, sensor arrays.
PICARD: Yes, I get the idea, Mister La Forge. Thank you. Please proceed.
(Data and La Forge leave)
PICARD: Computer, begin playback from the first measure.
(doorbell)
PICARD: Computer, pause recording. Come.

I used to have a Roland VS-2480CD 24 track recorder. For that era it was a welcome addition to my homestudio as PC's and Mac's weren't up to the work then. Nowadays there is nothing that can replace my new PC for me, I'm really happy with it. I'm sorry, but edditting on a PC/MAC is so much easier then on a say VS-2480cd.......

lol I didn’t know audio editing existed before those Roland VS machines came out.

One thing I’ve enjoyed on the iPad Cubasis/Garage band, it touch screen editing. I like it better than mousing around, and it feels a bit more direct. Almost, but not quite, like turning a dedicated knob. It’s not perfect, but I think it’s more tactile for basic (non super fine tuned) editing tasks.
