Short answer, yes, use a 1/4" unbalanced.

But it's not a good idea.

i figured it would work, i guess my main concern is signal degradation.

The higher sampling rates may be a problem. at 44.1 you may be ok but at 48 or 96 you may not even see a signal at the D/A.

I have had problems at 96 if I don't use a really good cable and I try and keep it as short as possible.
