I was down at my local high-end store today trying out pieces for my upgrade and listening to some of the monitors they have. Now for those that dont know, I have a smallish room(its bigger than the old room btw) and I dont mix overly loud. But somewhere in my mind I thought, "Dogg, yas gotsta getcha sum more monitors to play through whilst trackin. " I DO have a nice monitor setup. Genelec 1029's and a 1091 sub. Translation and accuracy aint da problem. more like monitoring tracking from the drum booth and keys up and direct at the console. So I'm thinking, "hey, dey got sum used KRK V8's down there for a nice price and these would do the trick"... Again I wasnt looking for something to mix on. .got it covered.

So I go down with a selection of stuff I like to listen to. .An album I produced and recorded, Franco and The Stingers, Cant Kick Love, John Hiatts Greatest Hits (the man makes beautiful sounding records), Jonny Davidson and his band Silversafe's Automatic Heart (everyone should buy this one!) and a couple other compilations for driving long distances. .

I put it in the CD player and switch around through the several nice monitor selections they have wired up.

KRK V8's(used and the target of my search), New KRK's (dont remember the model...wasnt impressed...8" woofer), DigiDesigns, Tannoys (5" woofers...nice and bright!), Samsons with the ribbon tweeter(only ok), and a couple more pairs of Genelecs.

So. He's got a pair of the 6010's hooked up to the small sub that looks like a gumdrop.

Pardon my langauge. ShiT!

So now I dont need new set of monitors I'll just stick with what I have cause theres not anything really better. .Anything thats comparable is simply different.

I dont know why, but my friend Donnie at the shop seems to get some perverse pleasure at blowing people minds with this set of speakers you could put in a backpack.

Seriously.

So are you saying he prefers little boombox speakers as his primary reference source? Are we talking like Auratones here? I mean if it sounds good on those, it'll generally sound good on most anything. Some speakers are just made too good for me to want to use as my monitors.

NOT boombox by any means. Tiny full-range real studio monitors with a tweeter and a woofer. He had the little Genelec sub hooked to em....in short their sub-compact monitor system....and it is killer. Unbelieveable how good it sounds.

They've actually got a pair of NS-10's and a pair of Horrortones for sale. Both in nice original condition......been there owned that....no thanks....

Its not that they sound great....they do...but from an accurate listening point they are way better than most budget systems. Of course they are spendy...

The Genelec stuff never ceases to blow me away. My 8050s might have cost more than my car, but I haven't regretted it for a second, especially now that I have a bigger room to use them in (in my old smaller room I honestly think I would have been better off with the ones with 6.5" woofers, it was just a sloppy bass mess... oh well, I'm outta there now!).
