I have never posted in this section before. I know little if anything about true mastering. I understand what it is, and what it is supposted to do to a recording, and I have paid for others to master my recordings.
Now, I have recorded some newer stuff as of recent. I have gotten some nice reviews. And it has not been mastered. But I was thinking about paying to have it mastered. Mostly because it will start to help me understand how much it is going to change my recordings. And I intend to start mastering all of my recording esp any paying customers (disc).
I would rather try someone from the RO community. IMHO there are some real pro's on here, and I have gotten some really helpful post(s) in the past that have tremendously improved every aspect of my recording skills.
We are going to re-record the drums and change some parts, and re-mix it one final time, so it is even that much better. And most importantly the vocals were never layed down. So I'm not 100% ready yet.
However, I do have a song or two already mixed (one song is an instrumental with a big solo, and the other is music with no vocals) that would be cool to have mastered. But it's not worth spending some real cash on before it is 100% complete. Which I do not mind doing, when the time arrives. Would anyone on here be interested in mastering a percentage of the song(s). So I can compare the results and know better who I want to use as soon as everything gets to that point. I also wouldn't mind hearing some comments from an audio engineer (that does mostly mastering) on my mixes I have now, so I can use the constructive comments to make any nessary adjustments.
I'm not sure if certain guys here on RO would rather "do" certain types of music, or rather "not do" certain other types of music. So, FWIW the songs are fairly heavy in sound. Something like Mudvayne, Tool. And the other song sounds something like a Seplatura drum type deal with a Rocky George type solo over it. The mix is pretty punchy IMO
I use an Alesis Masterlink. So I can provide redbook or a higher resolution if desired.

I agree, not many people would spend a lot of time tweeking something that isn't done, and for free. While shoot outs are not unheard of, they aren't that common either. I think your, and their, time would be better spent on you doing some research on who you might like to give it a go. contact them and supply them with a finished mix. Whether or not they'd be willing to do it for free would be up to the individual. In my experience, the ones you would like to have probably don't have the time to do freebies. A lot of Me's probably wouldn't mind taking a listen to a finished mix and giving their opinion, but beyond that, I think you're asking for a lot.

Last time I even bought up going to a local studio to master a track here at RO.
The first reply I got was "obviously you haven't done this before". Witch was another assumption, and an untrue statement.
I really dont see how so many RO readers assume so much.
For instance, if you have a question about what I'm really trying to do, please ask. But stating that I want or asked for ANYTHING free is to assume and without merit.
I was really hoping for some offers. For instance, a flat rate fee for X amount of minutes, say $100 for 2 minutes worth of audio.

I would rather find someone who likes the type of music I do and someone who's opinion I will respect above others. Rather than JoeBlow saying "I'll do anything for cold hard cash". I can find a slut like that anywhere.
But I was NOT trying to talk people "down" on their prices, And for me to suggest any givin amount may come off as an insult to some masters on here.

And it would be just as unfair for me to reply "Well obviously you guys aren't interested in getting new clients".
Now, like I said "Thanks for the honesty". I just want to make myself clear. And yes I understand, slavery is abolished. NO ONE should work for free. That's the way I see it.
Unless of course you are voluntering for the red cross, OR you are suggesting that you would do it for free. Because I did not expect ANYONE to do free ANYTHING for me.
It makes much more sense for someone to say to me, "O.K. I like that type of music, I understand you plan on doing more mixes to have mastered. And that you are looking for someone who is a pro. Send me one song and I will mix it down, at a flat fee. If you like my work, please use me in the future."

Thats just the problem. I have wanted to do that in the recent past. But I do not know every aspect of being able to do that. And I don't have a site to host my music.
Please don't reply with any negative replies. NOT that the other post(s) were negative. I an NOT saying that. I'm just NOT looking for an arguement. And if you are not interested in it. Please recommend anyone who might be.

There are a few places like myspace where you can put up some of your music. And it's free. I haven't done it but it seems to be pretty easy.
Most ME's that do this for a living that I know aren't the money grabbing kind of people.They survive mainly on word of mouth. They want clients to be happy and to go spread the word. So I don't think they would take something on if they didn't feel the client would be happy in the end. They all have a list of credits that you can scan through and if they have worked on stuff that you know and like, and in the same vain that your music is in, drop them an email and start a dialog. I think you'd be suprised how little it can cost to get one song done. that way you'll know how it's going to relate to your music and it won't be a huge gamble. Most also have easy ways for you to get your music to them eith to work on or just take a listen.

I would not recommend you send incomplete mixes to anybody for evaluation. You need to get at least one song to the point where all elements are present and mixed to your own satisfaction. If you send a half-baked mix for comment, then any recommendations made by a ME will be somewhat erroneous. This will not help you much.
You also are trying to initiate a freebie shoot-out. The language of your post seems to indicate you are looking to educate yourself rather than building a regular business relationship with an ME. So while shoot-outs are not uncommon in the mastering world, don't be surprised if you find not to many people bite for your proposition.
