I receive CDR mostly, then 1/2", then 1/4". Yes I still get 1/4", I think it sounds very cool. I think I've gotten like 4 dats in the last year. Now it's mostly files on rom.

Where all reels at 30ips?

1/4" is getting harder to find but it's still around. for 1/4" most is running at 15 ips. 1/2" running at 30 ips. Most of my clients that print to 1/4" are looking for that sound.

The majority of projects are now coming in as soundfiles. SDII, .WAV, AIFF are the most common. It's great because you have the ability of high-resolution data files. Some people bring there files on disc's some bring the hard drive.

If you're using a 24bit workstation it's important NOT to send 16bit audio CD's to use.

Then half inch and quarter inch tape. I sometimes master through my half-inch machine when people send me digital files. It can give the songs that analog transformer compression that just sounds great. I did this last week for a client who worked almost totally within a workstation and midi. It made a big difference.

Most of our stuff comes in on CDDA. We also get projects on 1/4" tape at 15 ips and 1/2" at 30 ips. We also do projects from Minidisc (yuck) and cassettes (double yuck) and the odd job from the all in one units like the Rolands. We have the facilites to do any tape format from 1/4" mono to 8 track 1" and all forms of Noise Reduction Dolby A, Dolby B, Dolby SR and dbx type one and two. We can also do transfers from obsolete formats including BETA HI-FI and BETA PCM.

We just got a request for such a service from someone who saw us on the net. We don't have a 1/2" 8 channel machine in house but we do have access to one in case someone needs that service. He wanted the tape transfered to ADAT if I remember correctly. I think he decided it was too costly to do the transfer.

What's unusual is it is probably going to need some balanceing/mixing before you master. So you're going to want to find this out before hand.

This way you are prepared.

DATs seem to have disappeared mostly & there is the odd cassette or transfer from vinyl/lacquer/metal part.

We also have 1630 & beta/PCM 601 (from digital's early days).

Yeah, dat died a fast death. I have to beautiful panasonic dat machines that I haven't turned on in a year. They are worthless now, or at least worth very little on the open market. That's what I hate about some technology, it lasts about 5 years. I have an ADAT machine that hasn't been used in 2 years. I have a mini disc machine that hasn't seen the light of day in nearly 3 years. My 20 year old 1/4" get's used once a week.

We still get a lot of Hip Hop and Rap clients binging their projects in on DAT tape. I had two last week. I guess it kind of depends on where you live and work and how techno savy your clients are or want to be.

I am happy the "DAT" days are gone.
