Im sorry for opening yet another soundcard thread, but I'm looking for something specific. i have had a hard time finding a "great" product with all these features:

8 analog ins
at least 2 pre's
firewire or pci
ADAT in for adding converters and/or more analog ins
BNC for word clock
8 analog outs
Inserts for adding bus compression

I have a P4 2.4 GHZ 512mb ram Serial ATA 80 GB 7200rpm hard drive and western digital 120gb ata drive. .use Cubase 1.3 & Nuendo 2

I was looking at:

RME Fireface. .(at the top of my budget) or the Multiface
The MOTU 896HD (the one with 8 pre's) but I heard it's crap
The firepod (no ADAT, only 2 outs)
EMU 1820 (just started looking at this today, but I'm not real impressed, looks good on paper though)
The LynxTwo C with the Aurora 8 channel converter/breakout box

The last option seems like the best but is WAY out of my budget.

If anybody sells gear for a living, i would GREATLY appreciate your opinions/experiences

Also, on a side note, i did post about the FW1884 which i decided against. I'm going instead with a used Mackie control if i can find a good deal on ebay.

I wish i had a decent store around here where i could talk to people that actually knew their sh*t. .I'm tired of walking into sam ash or guitar centers and have people look at me like I'm at best buy looking for power tools and paint..and you cant even show the stuff to yourself because its NEVER plugged in and if it is, its NOT working. .

I'm looking for 2 pre's at on board least just to get me started, I will need something to use while im tucking away money for the pre's I have in mind. With at least 2 pre's I 'll be able to put down ideas and practice my craft while im saving for the big guns.... :?

The fireface looks really sweet.......Im going to d/l the manual tomorrow and go through it...........

One other unit you may want to check out is the Echo Layla 3G. It has everything on your list, is around $500 and IMO has the best DAC's under $1000. I have (2) of the Layla 24's and love them. The 24's are no longer made but they didn't have pre's anyway. The EMU's Gaff spoke of are nice units also and probably the biggest bang for the buck.

if you want something fun and usable to start with i could recomend
http://search.ebay.com/yamaha-md8_W0QQfkrZ1QQfromZR8
i used an md8 for my first few recording and still use it for my idiea you can get them for under 500 and it has two pres w/ xlr, phantom and insert i/o and 6 line ins and all 8 tracks have send fx to out board gear. if your just starting this is a great peace to start with plus it has 8 direct outs so after you save for your lynxTwo w/ breack out you can transfer all eight tracks at once. also this works good for location recording on a budget.

a drawback though is mini disc datas can be expencive

Thanx frog for the recommendation....however im not really just starting out......I have a very good understanding of what exactly I need. I am looking to see what products do what I need them to do and do it well and reliably. I went through the fireface manual today and it looks like it might just be the perfect product for what i need.....(didn't really want to spend 1500 though)......

However, Id rather spend the money once, and not get something cheaper that I would outgrow in a couple of years......

I'm just wondering if FireWire is the way to go.......PCI has proven to be so reliable

Any thoughts?
