I recorded a very short excerpt from "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"(for demonstration purposes only of course). The goal was to do a bit of a shootout between reverbs:

I'll have to admit, some of these free plugins are sounding pretty amazing and I think I could probably find use for any one of them but there are certain ones I like better than others and it's certainly easier to get a good verb from certain ones. I'll let you decide which ones you think sound better.
I'll fill in the blanks some time later.

I actually liked the sound of your original CSR and the Valhalla one rather than any of the Shootout versions.
Maybe Shootout #4 or #6 were OK...the others I didn't like at all! Some were pretty harsh sounding and the reverb ring was almost annoying.
I've used Ambience and that's another good free plugin.

I totally agree that the original was better. Maybe I'll try to use that original session again. That being said, I also agree that quite a few of the reverbs were harsh. I like Shootout 1 because it's much softer. More natural but I am biased. Shootout 3 has potential but it's over the top as most of these are. Didn't like Shootout 5 much at all. Too difficult to work with. As it was, most of the free plugins were very difficult to work with. The Valhalla is quite complex but the presets get you in the ballpark and it sounds quite nice. A lot of the harshness comes from the fact that the plugins are reinforcing the direct signal even when the mix is set to 100%. This is a fault to my ears. When I set the mix to 100%, I only want to hear the effect from that bus.

I hear ya, there are so many controls and variations with these reverb plugin units.
Which can be either annoying or absolutely great depending on how one likes to use them.
I prefer just time, depth and diffusion and after that it starts to get pretty mind numbing and I lose interest.
What's your impression of that Ambience?
I found only a couple of the presets useable but with the right sounds and times they sound very smooth...which is what I like more than anything is the smoothness...

I should note that once I got the base tracks down I left them alone. The only thing that changes is the reverb. I noticed that in some of the tracks, even though I had the mix to 100% some of the dry signal was still coming through and boosting the sound of the dry over the wet.
