So I just installed LE a few days ago.. finally got around to recording some acoustic guitar tracks today to practice with it and I've run in to a problem: I'm trying to record a cover of "fell on black days" by soundgarden with the main rhythm guitar line doubled up and panned hard left and right. I can't play the song all the way through flawlessly (I'm a drummer) so I'm playing each verse and chorus in segments.
My problem is, when I go back about 10 seconds (on a track that's already got guitar on it) to give myself a head start to add on the next segment, it records destructively through that last bit of the part instead of non destructively even though I clearly have it set to non destructive recording.
Is there something I'm missing here? I'm guessing perhaps my sound card doesn't have the capability of non-destructive recording but I don't know. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think it'd be your card. With LE, your Mbox (rack or M-Audio) is your card. If you computer can handle those, it should be alright.
Double check that the track isn't record enabled. Is the part that's being recorded over selected by any chance?

PC or Mac???
If on a Mac trash all your protools digidesign preferences (plist), digisetuposx, and the digidesign dtabase that resides on the root of each drive.

Can't you just do auto punch in? I kinda thought that was a standard feature with most DAWs.

The track is enabled because I'm still recording on that track. I thought you could do that in pro tools. Isn't that what non-destructive recording is?

I believe it's non destructive in that your previous track still exists but if you want to merge it with your current track, you have to edit it in manually. It's not like midi where it mixes your current track with the previously recorded track.
Click where you want to punch in. Go to WINDOW - SHOW TRANSPORT

Click PRE-ROLL and change the time to however many seconds you want to back up and play along with it, it will punch in where you set the cursor.

Are you sure it's been destructively recorded? What happens if you use the Trimmer on that section? It should reveal the audio underneath.
Also- as mentioned above, use the transport to give you a preroll so you can set the punch in point on the new section.
So- Here's a few things to search for and read up on in the manual:
- Pre Roll
- Trimmer tool
- Smart Tool
- Slip mode
- shuffle mode
- Record modes
Hope this helps.

Pro Tools does not delete it. It is still under your new track you just have to trim the older track further to the right (over the newly recorded track).
