All I need Pro Tools for is to open Pro Tools sessions....then I was going to export each individual file and pull them into Cubase. Right now I'm being sneaky and making my computer a dual boot system with Win 98 so I can install PT Free. I know it is only 8 tracks, but I found a way around that thanks to the hackers of America. (I guess they are good for something).

Soo....hopefully I'll be able to do this free without having to buy a program that I don't want.

I'd be real careful with your piracy/hackers comment people that pay good money for these programs don't like people that steal the stuff.

I didn't steal anything. There is a modified version of Pro Tools Free that allows you to run more than 8 tracks. I doubt that any of the respected engineers in this community would want to be caught dead with Pro Tools Free regardless of how many tracks it supports.

I too am a person that pays for all of my software.....this is the only cracked piece I'd ever consider since Pro Tools serves no function to me other than opening Pro Tools sessions and exporting the audio files so I can use them in Cubase.

You can't steal a program that the manufacturer gives away for free. Modifying it to be slightly better may be considered an advantage, but not when you still have to run the program in Windows 98 or ME.

You're still taking more than is offered and you're using it to profit.

I can see what you are saying. At this point there isn't anything I do that is profitable...but I still see your point.

Once I get the money I want to buy PT anyway, but I can get any money until I get these jobs done.

The hacked version of free-PT may not be fully compatible with the
PT in which the sessions are made (or compatible at all). Why don't
you just book a studio with PT, bounce all the tracks on disk in
2-3 hours ?

I'm not a Cubase user, but was wondering if you could import OMF files. If you could import OMF you could just have the label save the Pro Tools session as an OMF file and then you could import the session into Cubase. That's what I do for DP on my Mac and it works well. The make a stand alone program called Digitranslator that could do this for you but I think it's about $400-500.

and pt free is as far as i know still 5.1..... protools le is now at 6.9

i would recommend mixing in protools..... i understand why you wanna compose in cubase...... but mixing sucks in cubase....

and as all your sofware is bought you can easily crossgrade/upgrade to rtas version.....

problem is that mbox sucks on everything not pt..... maybe you should have a look at pt m-powered

You can get the audio files from PT sessions out of the "Audio Files" folder. There is no need to have protools to do this. Just make sure that whoever closed the PT session consolidated all of the tracks so you can drag everything back to zero and it will line up.

A quick Q - My buddy recorded some of my Drum tracks to an older Pro-Tools "Mix" system (I don't know the version, but I thought I recall seeing version 5.xx on their Mac).

Can the M-Powered PT-LE open these older PT MIX sessions? I have a tower PC with the M-Audio 24/96 card, so the M-Audio powered PT-LE is a viable option *IF* I can open older PT and newer HD sessions.

You should be able to open both old and new sessions. Some options/features might not apply, but you should be able to open it.

Yeah, you can open the old TDM sessions, and new HD sessions IF they're recorded at rates at or below 48k/24 since that's as high as LE will go.

The problems I usually see when importing TDM/HD sessions into LE are:

A) Plugins that are not available in LE. This isn't a session killer by any means, but you get to click through a bunch of crap hitting "ok" a few times when you load the files. Easily fixed by removing any plugins that aren't RTAS or AS before copying the session over (TDM, HTDM are the two to watch out for I think). Last time I did this, simply bypassing the plugin does not work, you need to remove the insert (you can also permanently process the plugin to the track if you feel you need it, PT keeps the unprocessed track in the bin for you).

Also watch for plugins that you don't have on your computer, even if they're RTAS or AS.

B) Track count. LE only goes to 32 tracks, and although I haven't seen this happen more than a couple times, if the session has 32, I'm pretty sure you're screwed on your end. (haven't seen it happen since the digi 001 era though) Just make sure to check before grabbing the session.

Other than that, you should be set.

I'm leaning away from my idea already, as PT needs to have Hyper-Threading disabled. I'm not willing to cripple my system for the rest of my applications (Nuendo uses HT very effectively FWIW), OR change my BIOS settings anytime I need to boot PT and have a 4th installation of XP optimized for PT and no-HT support. Sounds like more work than its worth IMO.

Any input here? It is possible, just not as easy as a simple dual-boot system (my tower PC is already a triple boot XP-Pro optimized for different things), but taking it a step further to changing the BIOS when PT is needed as well as a 4th XP install is just ridiculous. I would not really mind another OS install, but BIOS changes? :roll: How long has HT been out now? And, why can Nuendo support it (for the past 2 major revisions now!), but not PT? Sorry - just venting my frustrations, as having access to PT sessions WOULD be cool IMO.

Oh well. I guess I'll hold out since I would not be able to return the PT software if I decided it was just too time consuming to change my BIOS everytime I need to open a PT session. Do they make a "PT Free" M-Audio version? I don't think they do :( .
