i was just wandering what the staples of your studio would be? this would include the type of music you record the most, basically if there is something you always pull out in every session or somthing you always use when nothing else will do.

ps. please omit monitors, stands, gaffers tape, ears, musicians with talent and good acoustic s. these sould be a given

There are few recordings I have made in the past, that don't have a SM57 on them somewhere for snare or a guitar amp ... I used to use Senheiser 421's on toms a lot but I'm using them a lot less these days .. in place of them I am now using the ATM Pro 35's (soooo convinent) ... Also used almost all the time the D112 or D6 for kick, ... and the U87ai for vocals and room micing ...

Nowdays I also use the Sebatron vmp 4000e a lot both in tracking and for send return gain managment when processing (pitch correction, eq, compression, gateing) in and out of DAW ...

These typically find some level of duty on pretty much every session:

- Great River MP-2NV
- Brauner Phantom C
- RNC's
- DBX 160SL
- Furman headphone distro
- Studio Projects B1
- Studio Projects C4's
- Canare DA206 cables (pretty much won't record through any other cables these days - I love these wires)

Not much to get excited about ... it's an average home studio, set up in my living room with an adjacent office / den used as a drum iso booth .. 3 - 16 space oak racks of outboard and patchbays and one rack with the preamps ... Mackie SR24 to monitor with.

NS10ms, Auratones and Tannoy DMT12's ... a computer desk and a Silence Case to house the computer.

I don't have any pics of it yet but as soon as I install some sound treatments (within the next couple of weeks) I will take some pics and post the links .. mmmm-kay?

I've been doing a lot of different stuff lately. The typical fare used to be the usual rock/altrock stuff - the usual cadre of local cover bands looking to update their demos, as well as a few original material groups. Been working with two different bands lately, both doing their second albums with me. One is more of an acoustic folk/rock type of thing, the other is best described as "jangly college rock" - an amalgam of styles ranging from Steely Dan, 10,000 Maniacs, jam band elements and some stuff I can't quite place.

Also just did some music beds and scene cues for a local theatre company. It involved using a blend of samples - ala AcidPro and Sound Forge - and live instruments that included a variety of ethnic instruments. Just finished recording some didgeridoo and Native American flute in fact. For that same project I also recorded a guy doing some electric violin (think Jean Luc-Ponty). Did a few voice overs for various local companies for their training videos - I just did the recording, they brought in their own voice talent. Somehow, I also manage to squeeze in a night or two a week working on my own stuff with a musical partner.

Also recorded the local Baha'i choir last year as well as a number of solo acoustic artists. I'm also about to start up a vinyl to digital archiving service for folks who want to put their old vinyl onto CD's. Not the most glamorous gig but, hey, it brings biz in the door ya know. '04 was probably my busiest year so far and it's looking like '05 could be busy as well. None of it will ever likely net me a Grammy or a big time reputation, but at least it keeps me sane, er, sort of. :?

Oh, probably should have listed my Radar24 as a staple. It gets used on every project. I love that machine. It brings me much jjjjjooooyyyyyyy. :D

Thanks for the kind words and comments, Mike! Although I record and mix far less than I used too, I get so much more joy and satisfaction from when I do record and/or mix on only the specific artists and projects I choose, that it makes each time a real rewarding experience just like it did in the early days of my youth.
