it could. just listen and adjust.
I that "method" was/is only a guideline. the "2 drum stick" height was almost a joke...I had been doing variations of this method for a while and would use a mic cable to measure the first distance and then the second, etc. I wanted to impart this technique "here" to people starting out and though that a technique using tools right at hand would be cool. 2 drum sticks just happened by coincidence to work out.
What I do is listen. Either wear headphones, or have the assistant raise and lower the first OH mic , move it around to find the first spot where the whole kit, especially the snare sounds best. Then measure and position the other. If your out in the room doing it yourself with cans on, have the drummer lightly tap the snare as you position the second mic, you'll hear right away if the imaging is right.

Lately I aim the two mics more at the toms, and still adjust to optimize for image.

I vary patterns to accommodate each time. Sometimes Omni, cardiod, fig-8, etc.
