I beseech you, the denizens of RO to help me spend my money wisely To preface, I have read most of the more recent threads here with the words distressor & FATSO in them.

What I want:
something outboard to run this (drums) or that (synths) through to give it a different/better sound quality. I dont want to use those certain words, I won't do it, like warm or fat :)
90% of the time I end up bouncing a lot of my tracks down to audio tracks anyway, and I want something outboard to impart different characteristics to those tracks. I'm looking for something that will hold most of its value for a few months at least, if I end up hating it or not using it.

Budget:
Between tax return and raise time at work I am allocating myself 3-4k in studio upgrade funds. My room treatment project is completely separate from this. Of course, the less I spend on this, the more there is for, say... an Elektron Machinedrum or Roland V-synth.

What I think I need/options:

1. The first thing that comes to mind is either a FATSO or the dual distressor unit. They are very sexy, people seem to love them. What I'm wondering is, are the converters on my [[url=http://="http://www.blacklio…"]modified[/]="http://www.blacklio…"]modified[/] MOTU 828MKII sufficient enough to get the signal out then back in again? If not, what would *you* recommend?

2. Crane Song HEDD. Again, you guys seem to dig pretty much anything made by Cranesong, their reputation seems to be a good enough selling point for me. This thing is really expensive though, so if option 1 could go ADDA-less I would rather hit that route.

3. Neve Portico 5042. I cant find much user info about this, but it's 2 channels and 1650$ so it fits. Again, I wonder about ADDA with this.

I'm open to any other options you guys might have. I'm not looking to just spend money to have more sh*t laying around, I do want a better sound. The music I make is purely ITB industrial/electronic/experimental, there is no live instrumentation to speak of, yet.

You know, your posting is slightly confusing in that if the music that you create is all " in the box", then you have no need for analog-to-digital conversion since everything is digital to begin with?? If you are using microphones, your MOTU FireWire unit is probably more than adequate, especially since you've already indicated it is " modified" (not sure what that implies)? You said you don't want to just " spend more money" which sounds like what you really want to do anyhow? There aren't many affordable items these days that actually hold their value beyond a few months. High-priced esoteric gear retains its value a little longer like Manley and DW Fern.

The compressors you mention are nice but there are also nice plug-ins within the digital realm to consider. Obviously no one else has responded to your posting probably for the same reasons I've stated? You seem slightly misguided? I know this is probably not the answer you wanted to see. Since I've seen your post the past couple of days, I thought I would answer from an experienced level. So there you are! I've just saved you a bunch of money! Now take me out to dinner?
