On some of those the sticks are only half the channels and you press a button to flip the faders to control the other half.

I see in your profile you have a BLA clock. Did you hear improvement when you use it?

I actually got the bla clock at the same time as my Motu. I felt I needed as much help sonically as I didnt get the ideal interface. I picked up something decent and reliable though to allow me to use the 24 channels on my Toft console. Im gonna try to do some recording with the Motu internal clock soon to see the difference... Its all fairly new to me, enjoying it and seems to be a never ending journey. Thinking about trying a RME interface...

The MoTU line may not get love as a high end interface but they are quality solid pieces of gear. If you like the general setup and want better then have BLA do their mod to it. Record something you can replicate for a before/after.

That was my intentions, to get the bla mod, but they dont do the to the 24io models...

According to their website they are modifying the 24i. I know for a while they had limited some mods to particular models of several manufacturers but that seems to be expanded again. They even mod the Fireface UFX which is surprising a bit since the quality of that device is so high to begin with.

Some other Black Lion Audio modifications merely involve eliminating electrolytic capacitors in favor of non-polarized polystyrene capacitors. While I've heard these modifications on other pieces of not so great equipment, it has a tendency to improve not so great equipment. I don't have any problems with the electrolytic capacitors. Sure, they influence the texture of the sound. But whatever they do, I like it. That is I like good electrolytic capacitors. I would never dream of modifying my Neve that way however. I like it for what it is. If you don't like the way a piece of equipment sounds, you should just sell it and get something you do like out-of-the-box. A more clean and transparent sound on a not so great preamp doesn't necessarily make it a better sounding preamp. But a great sounding preamp with electrolytic capacitors is still a great sounding preamp. And to improve something that is already great is rather counterproductive.

Much of what BLA does has to do with the digital side but they do modify spotty analog as well. They do more than replace caps.

And how do they modify integrated circuit chips? Really I believe they're only working on the analog side of things. I've been wrong before so...? But you know all of these devices are utilizing a commercial IC chip for analog to digital conversion. Maybe they are swapping out chips? So, yes, KTM, like in my ALESIS HD 24 XR might be what they are swapping out to? And those nice. But maybe it's not KTM if I've got that wrong? It's been a while since I poked my nose inside mine to look at those chips again. But those do make an audible difference I might add since I also have a stock original ALESIS HD 24 with the older analog to digital converter chips. That's why they were offering the EC 2 upgrade which are no longer available for the HD 24. Although some still exist around the world. I almost don't give a damn since it's really the front end that establishes your characteristic sound and that sound never gets lost regardless of analog to digital converter in use. What is just a little cleaner sounding which really doesn't make or break any good recording. Yes, yes, I know, better is always better. But that has no bearing on equipment or engineering technique, really. Plenty of great recordings still sound great from old 3M 32 track digital recorders which never even had 16 bit converters. They utilized a kludge of a 12 bit & 4 bit converter, sampled at 50 kHz and those recordings still sound incredible to this day even though they were dummied down to 16 bit 44.1 kHz such as Herb Alpert's Rise. Still a great album originally released on vinyl.

I thoughti the mod was based on the analog stage, bla says "by changing opamps it will allow the kvm converter to perform". They do modifcations to the old 24i model, not the 24io. I spoke to bla and they said the improvement wasnt what they wanted on the 24io. So the analog stage must be better and upgradedin the newer model I have from Motu.
